Why Pay For Things You Can Do Yourself - Haircuts

Due to a compendium of my lovely natural traits (i.e. frugality, particularity, abnormality), I got fed up with salons about a year ago and decided to venture into the world of self-hair-cutting. It's a big, scary world out there, and I figured maybe some of you who have yet to take the plunge could use a little guidance.

There are many reasons to cut your hair yourself. You could be like me--I went to the salon every 8-12 MONTHS, once my hair grew so long it needed, at a minimum, six inches sheared off and I always emerged with the same 'do: the dreaded newscaster bob (known to some as the American Girl doll haircut. Thanks, Beardo). I just looked for 20 minutes trying to find a picture where it's very clearly vanilla, but no such luck. Anyway, if you're tired of going to the salon and paying to not get what you want, give it a try. Hair grows--no damage you do can really be all that permanent. Unless you're delving into the deep, dark arts of alchemy that is hair dying. Never done it, but I am considering it, thanks to this blog.

When I first started thinking about cutting my hair, I used youtube as my only resource. I watched this video and it got me thinking about changing up my blah vanilla hair to something just a little more me. But in the video, the girl suggests using eyebrow trimmers, which I didn't have at the time. I moved onto another video, which I can't find right now, but the girl highly recommended using a straight razor that you can buy for $15 at any salon store. I didn't have $15 at the time, so when she said that she used to use a leg razor to cut her hair, I paused the video and decided a leg razor was more than good enough for me and got cutting.

The first cut, it came out like this (ignore the silliness):

I was VERY pleased with this cut and received so many compliments, I was sold on never going to the salon again. Since then, I've cut my hair every 12 weeks ( like you're supposed to do, gee whiz!) and I have felt more comfortable with my hair. I am in control (something I love) and I just feel sassier than any hairstylist has ever made me feel.

So if you're considering taking that plunge to spice your life up, go for it. I think I'm going to be dyeing my hair an interesting color or piercing something my mother would be ashamed of very soon.

P.S. I'm thinking eyebrow, you weirdos. Nothing down under.

  1. my momma is not going to be pleased with your eyebrow piercing. not pleased at all. also what color are you dying your hair? I'm thinking of going darker (real dark), but I'm chicken. Also, I know I've been saying that I'm thinking of going darker for YEARS and have yet to take the plunge, so maybe I'm just not a very brave person.

  2. I haven't decided whether or not I am going to do one or both or either. If I dye my hair, I was thinking something fun like a dark, dark purple or blue. But then again, I might just ease into it with a bleached chunk of blonde hidden somewheres in my hairs.
